How to get more customers through search engines

Although this article is about how to get more customers through Search Engines, I’m gonna start by explaining it in terms of my family.

Like this:

Adam, Robert, Lisa, Matthew.

That’s what my Mum calls me when she says my name.

It’s a curious thing being called all of your siblings’ names before she gets to yours.

Once she called me Beth (my niece, btw).

“Matthew,” I usually say before she gets to my name, just in case she starts going through my cousins’ names too.

But what the hell am I rambling on about?

Well, in my blog post 7 Ways To Master Short Copy, I talk about being direct and telling people who you are and what you do without all the fluff.

Here, I want to explore that further.

How to get more customers by cutting out the fluff

Getting to the point of what you call yourself is vital for your business.

do businesses need a copywriter

On LinkedIn, I call myself a:

✔️ Fun Brand Copywriter

It covers everything I do for my business.

I could call myself a:

✖️ Word Technician
✖️ Content Constructor

But I don’t.

I make it plain, simple and to the point.

Why?

Because you have to use the words your customers are using to find you.

Whether it’s on LinkedIn, Google, Facebook or whatever, your customers are searching for your job title in need of your expertise.

Going back to the ‘7 Ways To Master Short Copy‘ post, I mentioned that if you’re a Wedding DJ, be proud of what you are. Calling yourself a Matrimonial Audio Technician, on the other hand, only leads to confusion.

Nobody calls a Wedding DJ a Matrimonial Audio Technician, and if they do, why!?

How using proper names and titles helps your SEO

Using a left-field name or title nobody uses may make you look a bit ‘edgy‘. And you may be the only person who shows up on Google when you search that keyword, but most of your potential customers and clients will be searching for your proper title.

Use it throughout your website. It’ll increase your SEO ranking and will help people find you.

Right:

✔️ Painter and Decorator

Wrong:

✖️ Wall Solution Colourist and Paper Pasting Guru

Urgh.

I mentioned this to my decorator, Brian and his face when I told him the wrong one was a picture. So, you know the above examples are right.

Straight from the horse’s mouth.

Don’t forget your local SEO

One massive thing about getting more customers on Google, Bing and the like is local SEO.

Having a Google Business Page is a biggie; it tells Google where you are and pins you on a map for local businesses to find you.

Ignore the Liverpool bit; I go into waaay more depth on this in my post, “How Liverpool businesses can improve SEO.” Substitute places for ones relevant to your location, and it works exactly the same way.

Create a landing page for your area

I do this by using my homepage template and rewriting my copy for a specific niche or location. I have loads, but here are two of mine:

One. Copywriter for businesses in Manchester

how to get more customers

Hang on, I’m in Liverpool, right?

Yep, but I’m from Moston in Manchester, so I make sure I have a landing page that directs people in my home city to me. If Manchester businesses need a local copywriter, I’m still available (I live 30-mins from the MCR).

Having area-specific landing pages, like my Manchester copywriter one, helps me become more discoverable.

Two. Copywriter for toy companies

This beauty got me found by Toymonster, for whom I wrote the product descriptions for the Jurassic World: Rebirth toys.

This toy copywriter landing page has been an absolute wonder for me, as it also turned out to be the page an agency found me through, which led to me writing a project for LEGO!

If you’ve pulled your hair out over how to get more customers and clients online, niche and area landing pages are incredible ways of doing it with huge success!

Are you writing copy that gets you found?

If not, go through your website and social media and change it to what you do.

I make a living writing copy, so I’m a copywriter or a content writer.

Letter connecting word wizard may sound like I’d have lots of fun wearing a hat with drawings of pencils and lightning flashes on it, but ain’t no one searching that. If you cut the crap and make things easy, it really will help customers find you – giving you a better chance of growing your client base.

And as for my Mum going through everybody’s names before mine?

Well, I think we all go through that at some point.

Luckily I’m her son, so she doesn’t have to Google my name. Give her twenty minutes and she’ll get there in the end.

Until next time,

Matt
